Oil wrestling, known as “Yağlı Güreş” in Turkish, is a traditional sport deeply rooted in Turkish culture and history. This unique form of wrestling is characterized by the use of olive oil, which both lubricates the bodies of the competitors and symbolizes purity and endurance. In oil wrestling, athletes, known as “pehlivanlar,” wear traditional leather trousers called “kispet” and douse themselves with olive oil before the match. The objective is to take down the opponent by pinning their shoulders to the ground. Matches can be physically demanding and require a combination of strength, technique, and strategy.
